Bad Company 2 – Demo test

•03 February 2010 • Leave a Comment

You know, there is a demo out right now. I’m going to start it. Right now. And I’m going to play it and write down what I think about, I tried it earlier today and it felt allot like the first one. Of course a few things have been changed, graphics improved and so on. It’s a multiplayer demo so its hard to tell what’s new and better in the single player campaign. Well lets see what we get from this shall we!

(The test will be done on xbox360).

So what do we see when we start the demo:
First I want to mention the Weapon and Gadget menu. Here we can see all the weapons that will be available in the full game, 28 weapons that are specific for different classes (Assault, Engineer, Medic & Recon) and also another 15 weapons that can be used in any class. There are also gadgets, as in the first game, these are motion sensors, C4, Knifes and grenades and so on.
And finally we have the awesome specializations menu. Feeling alot like the perks you would add to your character in Call Of Duty, yet most of them are extra equipment rather some extra “special power”. Like better scopes, armor and upgrades for tanks you drive. Very neat.

If we look a bit further down in the menu we also found: My stats. Just like any new FPS game we feel like we neeeeed this (apparently), to show our huge e-dicks with better k/d ratios. Anyway. Lets start the fighting!

There is only one map in the demo, the icy “Port Valdez”, I believe its called. You have the instant option to join a squad or enter a squad later on. As a team player, I jumped right in to a group of people. The new medic is also a great addition for just that, team playing, being able to revive your allies with the “Defib”, and make you lose one less re-spawn.

I started of as the engineer, we are attacking and as in Bad Company 1, we have 2 places to detonate to get more re-spawns and push the enemies back. At a first glance what you notice is that the HUD feels modern. The circles and names on the map showing you this and that feels flashy in a positive way, with a futuristic neon-like feature to them. You still have the option to spawn in your base, or to one of your squad members, the later being the best (usually).

The teams are at the moment 10 vs. 11, even though this isn’t a HUGE difference from the team sizes in other FPS games on console, it makes a big difference in the actual game, mix this with the squad re-spawn and all of a sudden the game feel epic. The maps are still extremely huge and give you several different strategies to try. They have taken the best qualities from BC1 and put it in here for sure.

Another thing I noticed is that, after you’ve been heavily damage, you don’t stay in the “grey wounded zone”. In bad company one, this could be very annoying, you got wounded, and played as a sniper, and everything would be grey and the sound effects muffled out by a weird echo sound. It was annoying, thank goodness that’s not in here anymore. The sound effects are still high-class, it sounds like an actual battlefield, and the different calls on you radio sounds genuine. Something that can be lacking in other games.

The movement is allot smoother than before. You can turn and twist allot easier now then you could in BC1. Overall the game looks and sounds and plays well. And even though I don’t believe it will be Modern Warfare 2 killer like some people hoped, it will be a great new FPS game. I will be playing it and enjoy just I like I did the first one.

Top 10 games of 2009!

•18 January 2010 • Leave a Comment

So the top 10 games of 2009 in my book, and what I’ve played. Can’t speak for the ones I didn’t try sorry. So lets start on the bottom shall we. On spot number 10…

10: Battlefield 1943
The real reason this game is on this list. It’s not only because it’s a sweet multiplayer game, but also with the fact that it was released is an arcade game, or stand alone multiplayer game if you so wish. That fact just blows me away, cause it really feels as a part of something bigger, I am glad that everyone can get to enjoy some battlefield!

9: Guitar Hero Metallica
Metallica is my favorite band. I can now rock out to their music without concert tickets or real instruments. I think that settles it?

8: Fallout 3
What I love about Fallout 3 is that it appealed to so many people. The action gamers enjoyed the action part of the game, the RPG players enjoyed the depth of the interaction in the game. It also brings more stories to the fallout universe, a universe I hope will never die. If you didn’t enjoy this new Fallout game, but still like good RPs’ I suggest you try Fallout 2, the best game in the series. It’s a great game. One of the best games. PLAY IT.

7: Dawn Of War II
Been a bit slow on RTS games lately, and I love RTS games. Star Craft 2 is not in stores yet and I can’t wait for that, so this will have to do. Dawn Of War 2 based on the Warhammer universe. In the distant future there is only war and you will lead the space marines against a horrible enemy. Good game, great multiplayer (lacking in variety but great non the less).

6: Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Sorry, again, I’m a huge fan of the game series and a new game was released, and it was good. So I have to put it on here, I wrote a semi-review on it just awhile ago so look it up.

5: Heroes Of Newerth
Another game I recently wrote about. What can I say, read it and see what I think. It’s a “copy” of DoTA but a much better game in general. Got a code for it, played it, loved it, can’t get enough of it.

4: Braid
Released ages ago but man, is this a great game or what! Imagine Super Mario with time puzzles! Yes that will give you Braid. A wonderful game to play and look at, and if you can stop playing this without completing it, well than I guess you’re not a big game fan.

3: Mirror’s Edge
I’m from Sweden, the game is Swedish, my favorite colors are red, black and white in a mix, this game gives me that, I love solving puzzles and… well this game kind of gives you that in a “hello-lets hurry-up-they-are-shooting-at-you-and-you-need-to-flee-in-cool-and-awesom-action kind of way.

2: Resident Evil 5
Yes. I love zombies, always been fanatic of them, love old zombie movies. Love Romero’s work and I love Resident Evil. The fifth game never really exploded like the fourth game in the series, yet it’s still a great game that adds on to the Resident Evil story line. With the new co-op mode, this game was the best “friend” game out there this year. Many would say that Left 4 Dead 2 would take that away from Resident Evil, but there is a big difference in game play. Resident Evil 5 fits well with teamwork. Incredible game and should not be missed, especially if you have somebody to play with!

1: Modern Warfare 2
Bought it. Level in it. Nuke in it. Shoot in it. Stab in it. Multiplayer is the deal. Single player is okay but with a bit to many “oh no I’m going to die scenes”.

Love it!
Play it if you like FPS games.
You wont regret it!

•18 January 2010 • Leave a Comment

Just realized that I havent posted the top 10 list of 2010 yet. Maybe not a bad thing. And I just noticed I had a hit overload on one of my posts. Heroes of Newerth all of a sudden had about 200+ hit. Will investigate why this happened, I may also start writing strategy tips, or post arguments for why this and that works better. Ofcourse this is from a noobs standpoint, and any comments or help on that would be awesome! :)

Well at the moment im in school, the school im thinking of quiting. We’ll have to see about that…

Anyway when I get home I will find that list and post it!

What to call, YouTube channel

•03 January 2010 • Leave a Comment

So im going to start a new YouTube channel for all my gaming related videos, that will be linked on here and my completle new connection with the outside world! But… what should I call it? Start/Select is already a “show” that is on there at times. So stealing that would feel a bit odd.

Example of tips I’ve had so far:
Nurgles gaming Corner
The Swedish Videogame Nerd
The Swedish Game Nerd

I really need some good ideas for the name before I can start.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope

•25 December 2009 • Leave a Comment

So what can I say, Star Ocean: The Second Story is my favorite game of all time. When I first read the news about the release of a new Star Ocean game, I was thrilled, excited and was looking forward to it like no other game at the time. Then it came, and still I didn’t buy it on the release date, I was not first in line (even though I doubt there was one), and instead I waited for some reviews of the game.

The game prior to The Last Hope, was released on Playstation 2 with the title: Till The End Of Time. I liked the game per say, but it was lacking so much from earlier games. Sadly becoming a game shortly after being completed wasn’t revisited, like the other Star Ocean games (not to brag but I completed the second one up to 6 or 7 times).

So with this behind me, I did not buy the newest Star Ocean game on the release. Shortly after reviews followed… and that didn’t really help me situation. I read how they thought the game was lacking in emotion, how the Japanese inspired RPGs’ were dead. Now after my foolish decision to wait for a price drop. I finally got it for Christmas, seeing how the special edition version of the game was on sale I added to my very short list of things I wanted for Christmas. There it was, wrapped in paper and my name on it.

I opened it, I played it and WOW! I just felt like kicking some of the people badmouthing this game. Okay okay, I didn’t want to do that (a punch would do). The fighting in the game had been greatly improved with new ways of dodging attacks, jumping around and the visuals are stunning! So after awhile… to be exact, after four hours of playing, I was happy, satisfied and can’t wait to see what will happen with my new virtual friends.

For everyone that loves the Star Ocean saga, The Last Hope won’t be disappointing, it’s a lovely game that really brought me back to the series. So remember, whatever a review might say, as long as YOU like the game, it doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks in the end. The good thing about waiting before you buy a game:

1. The price goes down.
2. You may end up getting as a gift!
3. Well the above two just makes it feel so worth it! :D

PS. A proper review of the game will be up as soon as I… either finish it or feel ready to do so.
